Updated · 4 min read

Short answer

A CF1R is the Certificate of Compliance used for single-family residential projects in California. Submitted with the permit application, it documents that the design meets the Energy Code. The most common variant is CF1R-PRF-01, produced by performance-method software.

CF1R variants

  • Performance (PRF) — whole-building computer model; most flexible.
  • Prescriptive — component-by-component; common for simple alterations.
  • Alteration forms — for scopes like HVAC or window replacement.

Registration

Where the Energy Code requires it, CF1Rs are registered with an approved data registry before submittal. Your building department will tell you whether a registered copy is required for your project.
